4 Reasons to Fix Your Leaky Roof Sooner Than Later

A leaky roof can lead to serious problems for your home. A small drip can turn into something much larger if it is not handled in a proper and timely manner. The second you see a leak in your roof, you should contact your local roofing contractor to fix it. Here are 4 reasons why you should fix your leaky roof sooner rather than later.

Increased Roof Damage

A small leak can turn into something much more damaging and costly. If water is able to get inside your home, it will begin to soften the wood making it unstable. It can lead to bigger problems down the road like more leaks, ice dams during the winter, and even your roof to collapsing.

Mold and Mildew

Mold and mildew are common occurrences of a leaky roof. They can be found nearly anywhere from drywall to installation. If mold begins to grow because of a leaky roof it can be tough to locate since you are most likely not in your attic or on your roof every day. It will find warm, dark areas of your home and can get out of control if the leaky is not fixed quickly. If they are able to spread to your walls, ceilings, and floors, they can even damage the look of your home. Though most molds are not hazardous, there are certain instances where mold can be harmful to your health so it best to be safe and treat mold no matter what type it is.

Efficiency of Installation

Water in your attic and walls can cause them to become dramatically inefficient. Most homes these days use fiberglass insulation due to its ability to keep in heat well. When it is exposed to water, it tends to clump up and compress, causing it to lose its value. This can cause your house to become much colder in the winter and warmer in the summer than it should be and may even cost you extra money on heating and air.

Electrical Damage

People tend to forget that most of your electrical wires run through your walls. If water damage from a leaky roof is able to get into your walls or attic, then it could cause minor damage like a breaker be tripped or an appliance shorting. It could even cause severe damage like an electrical fire or injury. It is best to play it safe and get the leak fixed as soon as possible to avoid bigger issues.
