Why It’s Ideal To Have Your Old Roof Underlayment Replaced

Many homeowners are only familiar with roofing components that they can see. Sure, they may know what the shingles are, and they can probably even point out where the flashing is, but what about the stuff that’s underneath? When it comes to residential roofing replacement, the underlayment is just as important as the shingles themselves. Here’s why.

Why a Tear-off Is Ideal

When it’s time to replace your aging roof, you will have to choose between one of two options: re-roofing or a full replacement.

Re-roofing is the process of replacing an existing roof covering. While it may be the more economical option, it isn’t always the best. There are problems that even the most seasoned residential and commercial roofing contractors cannot detect. When you replace only the outer layer or add an existing layer on top of the old one, you are not really fixing the problem, only covering it.

With a complete tear-off, your roofer will go section by section, removing old materials including the underlayment itself. If your roof is in bad shape, we recommend the tear-off process so that the problems are addressed instead of simply covering it up.

The weight capacity of your roof is also a major consideration. You see, your old roofing shingles are heavy enough as it is even without the extra layer. Add to that the weight of snow or water and you could be seriously compromising your roof’s integrity.

Whether you’re in need of seasonal roof jobs or are looking for a contractor to perform emergency roof repairs, you can turn to the folks over at US Roofing for help. Call us today at (978) 532-6300 to schedule a consultation or fill out our contact form to request a free estimate.
