How Roof Decks Can Get Damaged and Why They Can’t Be Repaired

The sun’s harmful rays, strong winds or torrential rain. There are many things that can harm your shingles, but did you know that the components underneath could also be damaged? The roof deck is the material between the structural components and the insulation and weatherproofing layers. Simply put, it’s the section of your roof where everything else is attached. In today’s post, roof storm damage expert, US Roofing, explains what could lead to roof deck damage and why repairs aren’t an option.

What Could Damage Your Roof Deck?

In most cases, roof decks are damaged due to heavy snow loads and excess moisture caused by insufficient ventilation in the attic. Damage could also be attributed to areas where there are missing shingles as well as natural wear and tear.

Since roof decking is underneath the shingles, thorough roof inspections are needed to determine the extent of the damage. Common signs of a damaged roof deck include visible holes in your roof, mold and mildew growth and, in advanced cases, visible sagging.

Why Can’t a Damaged Roof Deck Be Repaired?

Since most decking materials are made of composite wood fibers, they are highly susceptible to moisture damage. When there is too much moisture, rot is likely to occur, weakening the entire support structure of your roofing system. Repairs, even when done by a highly trained professional, will just be a temporary fix and you will end up replacing your roof anyway. If there is evidence of roof deck damage, the only sensible solution is to have your roof completely replaced.

From routine repairs to flat roof replacements and everything in between, US Roofing is the roofer to trust. Give us a call at (978) 532-6300 to schedule an appointment or fill out our convenient contact form and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
