How Adequate Attic Insulation Helps Your Roof and Home

Even if it’s not something you see all the time, the insulation inside your attic plays a big role in keeping your roof healthy. Without insulation, your roof and home would experience problems. So, if you’re looking to improve your roof’s health and extend its life span, having adequate attic insulation is a requirement. US Roofing explains why.

1. It helps prevent structural issues. To make sure that your home and roof stay in good shape, your roof rafters should have no cracks or other weakness. Problems with your rafters can begin with poor attic insulation. When there isn’t enough insulation, the rafters are more likely to expand and contract with temperature changes. This can lead to cracking, which may compromise your roof’s structural integrity.

2. It helps minimize your roof’s risk of leaking. The primary function of your roof is to protect your home from the damaging effects of moisture. However, certain roofing issues may allow leaks to develop, increasing the risk of mold growth and rot. Minor leaks, if not repaired, can grow worse over time. With sufficient attic insulation, you provide your roof with an extra layer of protection from leaks and water damage.

3. It protects your shingles. Shingles start to wear down from the time they’re installed until they reach the last years of their serviceable life. Temperature changes can cause shingles to crack or become brittle, making them more vulnerable to the elements. As a result, shingle deterioration will occur at a faster rate. But with attic insulation, you help protect your roof’s shingles from the effects of temperature changes. This allows the roofing materials to maintain a more even temperature, reducing the risk of cracking or becoming brittle.
