4 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Roofing Contractor

Whether it’s for a seasonal roof job or a regular roofing appointment, you have to ask the right questions to make sure that you’re getting a reputable roofing contractor with a good track record. In this blog, US Roofing shares some of the most important questions to ask before you hire a roofing contractor.

Questions to Ask a Roofing Contractor Before Hiring Them

1. “What is your roofing experience?” An experienced commercial and residential roofing contractor is less likely to commit mistakes. This is particularly important for homeowners who are not as knowledgeable with the entire roofing process, because an experienced roofer can be trusted to manage the project and make sure it’s completed on time, up to specifications, and within budget.

2. “Are you licensed and insured?” A license can be issued on a city, county, or state level, depending on your location. In Massachusetts, roofers must be issued a Construction Supervisor License from the State Board of Building Regulations and Standards, plus a state registration if they must work on existing structures. A valid license is your proof of the roofer’s legitimacy, and your assurance that they won’t run away with your money. The roofer’s Insurance coverage, which should include general liability and workers’ compensation, is your protection from accidents or damage to your property during the project. Your prospective roofer should have no problems providing copies of their license information and insurance certificate.

3. “Can you provide an estimate?” The roofing contractor should be able to draw an estimate in a relatively short time after discussing your roofing plans. You should receive a digital copy by the end of the consultation, followed by a printed copy delivered to your door a few days later. You should be given ample time to review and amend the document, without being pressured to sign.

4. “What is the project’s timeline?” Your prospective roofing contractor should be able to commit to a project timeline, complete with a start date and an estimated completion date. Ask them about how they plan to deal with delays caused by inclement weather or unexpected repairs.

A Few Things to Do Before and After Interviewing Your Contractor

It also helps to prepare for the interview by looking up the contractor’s track record through customer feedback on their website or on their Facebook and Google Business pages. Ask the contractor for references from previous clients and call them after the interview. Most importantly, pay attention to how the contractor responds to complaints or negative reviews. A good contractor should respond in a professional manner and offer solutions to their customers’ problems.
