Common Roof Replacement Mistakes to Avoid

Replacing your roof is one of the biggest—if not the biggest—home improvement project you will ever tackle. And if you have an asphalt shingle residential roofing system, you’re facing a replacement once every 20 years or so.

The regularity of this occurrence, coupled with the importance of your roof to your well-being, means you shouldn’t cut corners when replacing your roof. In today’s post, US Roofing discusses three common mistakes homeowners do when installing a new roof.

Too Much Focus on the Price

It is as they say—you get what you pay for, and that applies to almost anything, including roofing. If you’re going to skimp on your roof, you should expect that the quality of the materials, including how it’s installed, will be vastly inferior to one that’s priced competitively.

Make no mistake; any residential or commercial roofing job is an investment. The idea is to spend a lot now, instead of spending even more down the line because of repetitive patch jobs that would have been otherwise non-existent if you’d invested wisely in the first place.

Waiving a Written Estimate

A written estimate from your roofing contractor is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself from fraud. This document can give you an idea of how much you’re going to have to spend, but it will also prevent your contractor from over-charging you, or worse, changing their charges on the fly because you don’t have a reference.

Skipping a Contract

Like an estimate, a contract is a document that details the particulars of your roofing project. Unlike the estimate, however, a contract is legally binding, which means you can take it to court if you think your contractor has swindled you. A contract also avoids misunderstandings, as the contract clearly states the purpose, duration and scope of the work.
